Bread pudding, or bread pudding, is a dessert of British origin. Its preparation is based on stale bread, to which milk, butter, eggs, cinnamon and other ingredients of your choice are added. In this recipe we will enrich the basic dough with chocolate chips, but if you are a fan of dried fruit, you can create a very similar version by replacing the chocolate chips with raisins.
In America, where it is very popular, it is often served with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream or caramel. The recipe for this dessert was born from the need to recycle leftover bread. When you have leftover bread, it is always a good idea to keep it aside because sooner or later you will always find a way to reuse it. For example, you can transform it into breadcrumbs, or reuse it in sweet recipes like in this case.
To prepare the bread pudding, simply soften the bread in a bowl with milk and squeeze it. Add it to the other ingredients in another bowl and finally bake it in the oven for about 45 minutes. A very simple and quick dessert.
Ingredients to make Chocolate Bread Pudding:
- 400 grams of soft bread
- 500 milliliters of milk
- 250 grams of white sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 lemon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
- 80 grams of semi-sweet chocolate chips
How to make Chocolate Bread Pudding:
- To begin the recipe for bread and chocolate pudding, it is important to prepare the ingredients in advance. A pudding is a kind of sweet cake that is made with eggs and milk and is usually cooked in a bain-marie. In this way, you should also have a saucepan, deep tray or any other heat-resistant container larger than the mold you will use for the pudding.
- Place the crumbled soft bread in a deep bowl. Then, add the lemon zest, sugar, vanilla essence and milk. Using a hand mixer, mix all the ingredients.
- Tip: You can also make the bread pudding with condensed milk and chocolate by replacing the whole milk with this other milk. However, reduce the amount of sugar.
- Add the eggs one by one and beat to integrate them with the rest of the ingredients. Keep in mind that you should not add the second until you have integrated the first egg.
- Add the sugar to the bottom of the mould and heat it in a bain-marie until it melts and the caramel forms. Be very careful when doing this step, as you could burn yourself with the hot caramel. Keep the mould off the heat so that the caramel cools.
- When the caramel has cooled, add the bread dough, milk and eggs to it. Then, spread the chopped chocolate over the pudding. This way, it will melt in the oven and will be evenly integrated into the dough. Another way to make chocolate-flavored bread pudding is by adding cocoa powder to the bread dough and mixing well.
- Cook the bread and chocolate pudding in a bain-marie for approximately 45 minutes. To do this, cover the mould and place it in a larger saucepan filled with boiling water. You can also do this process in the oven, on a high-sided tray filled with water. When it is ready, remove the mould from the water and allow the pudding to cool before unmoulding it.
- Once it has cooled, remove the bread and chocolate pudding from the mould and decorate it with grated chocolate, whipped cream, meringue whatever you like! You can keep it in the fridge or freezer, tightly covered, and serve it as a dessert.
